What Is Silicone Molding?


Silicone molding is a two-stage production technique. First, a master model is made — at 3D Lab Bali the master is 3D printed on an FDM or SLA resin printer, so even complex shapes can be produced with no tooling cost. Second, the master is cast in liquid silicone inside a mold box. Once the silicone cures, the master is removed, leaving behind a precise mold cavity.

That silicone mold becomes your “production machine”: resin is poured into the cavity, left to cure, and comes out as an identical copy of the master. The process can be repeated dozens of times from the same mold — which is exactly why silicone molding is so efficient for small-batch production.

Why silicone? The material captures extremely fine detail — textures, engravings, even fingerprints on the master will replicate — while staying flexible enough to release shapes with undercuts without damaging the casting. That combination of precision and flexibility is something rigid molds simply don't offer.

Print One by One, Injection Molding, or Silicone Molding?


For one to a handful of units, printing directly almost always makes the most sense — no mold cost, straight to production. For thousands of units, injection molding wins on a very low per-unit cost, despite the large upfront cost of metal tooling.

Between the two sits the range that confuses most people: dozens to a few hundred units. Too many to print one by one (slow, and the cost stacks per unit), too few to justify injection tooling. This is where silicone molding shines: the upfront cost is just a 3D-printed master plus a silicone mold — far below metal tooling — while every subsequent copy is faster and cheaper than printing another one.

There is another bonus: cast parts inherit the smooth surface of the finished master — no layer lines typical of 3D prints. Sand and polish the master once, and every copy carries the same surface quality.

The process starts like a regular 3D print order: send us your 3D file (STL, OBJ, 3MF, or STEP) or just an idea with reference photos — our team can model it for you first.

Once the design is final, we print the master using the most suitable technology — SLA resin for fine detail, FDM for larger parts — and finish its surface. Next we build the mold box, plan the parting line, pour the silicone, and let it cure. Then production begins: resin is cast into the mold repeatedly until your quantity is met, with a quality check on every unit.

Mold Types: One-Part, Two-Part & Multi-Cavity


The shape of your object determines the mold type. Objects with one flat side — magnets, coasters, plaques — only need a one-part (open-face) mold. Fully three-dimensional objects with complex curves need a two-part mold, split along a carefully planned parting line so castings release easily and the seam stays hidden.

For small items in larger quantities, we build multi-cavity molds — one mold containing several cavities, so each pour yields several units at once and production time drops dramatically.

What material are the final parts made of?

Copies are cast in resin. Colors can be customized, and for food-contact applications we make molds from food-grade silicone.

Do I need a 3D file?

No. You can come with a sketch, a photo, or even a physical object — our team offers 3D modeling and 3D scanning to create the master.
